Add Line Numbers to Text Online

Number every line of a list, document or data file — starting from any number, in the format you like: 1. or 1) or [1] or 001.

When numbered lines help

Numbering turns a wall of lines into something people can point at: "see line 14" beats "the one near the middle" in every classroom, code review, contract markup and data check. Teachers number handouts so a whole class can find the same sentence; editors number drafts so comments attach to exact lines; and anyone preparing a list for import can verify counts at a glance.

How to use it

  1. Paste your lines, choose where numbering starts and which format you want.
  2. Tick "Do not number empty lines" if blank lines are spacers, not items.
  3. Copy or download the numbered text.

Frequently asked questions

Can I remove the numbers later?
The numbers become part of the text, so keep your original. If numbers follow one of these regular formats, the Find and Replace tool can help strip a repeated pattern.

What does the 001 format do?
It pads numbers with leading zeros to three digits, which keeps columns aligned and makes files sort correctly by name.
