What is keyword density — and what is a healthy figure?

Keyword density is the share of your text that one word or phrase makes up: a word used 15 times in a 1,000-word article has a density of 1.5%. Writers check it for two opposite reasons — to make sure an important topic word appears often enough to be clear what the page is about, and to catch accidental over-repetition that reads unnaturally ("keyword stuffing"), which search engines penalise. For most topics, a main phrase around 0.5–2% with natural variation reads well; there is no magic number, and readability always wins.

How to use it

  1. Paste your draft. The top single words and two-word phrases appear instantly.
  2. Tick "Ignore common words" to hide grammar words and see only the words carrying meaning.
  3. Check your topic phrases: present, but not crowding out everything else.

Frequently asked questions

Does this tool check my live web page?
No — paste the text itself. Running in your browser means drafts that are not published yet stay completely private.

Why do two-word phrases matter?
Topics are usually phrases, not single words. "Content" alone tells you little; "content marketing" at 1.2% tells you exactly what the page is about.
