Why sort a list alphabetically?
Alphabetical order is the order people can search. A guest list, stock list or class register in A–Z order lets anyone find a name in seconds instead of scanning the whole page. It is also the fastest way to spot duplicates and gaps: two copies of the same entry land right next to each other, where your eye catches them.
How to use it
- Paste your list, one item per line.
- Pick A–Z or Z–A. Leave "smart number sort" on if your lines contain numbers — it knows Item 2 comes before Item 10.
- Optionally remove duplicates or empty lines in the same pass.
- Copy the sorted list or download it as a text file.
Frequently asked questions
How are names with capitals handled?
By default the tool ignores case, so "banana" and "Banana" sort by their letters, not by capital-first rules. Turn "Ignore case" off if you need strict computer ordering.
Can it sort by surname?
Not directly — it sorts by the first character of each line. For surname order, put the surname first in your list (for example "Khan, Ali") and sort that.
